Composite Fillings

Treat Cavities & Restore Your Smile

Tooth Colored Fillings

If you have a cavity, we offer efficient treatment with composite fillings to restore your dental health. Essentially, cavities are small holes created in the enamel of your teeth by bacteria and plaque. During treatment, our dentist removes decayed and damaged material. We then fill the cavity left behind with tooth-colored composite to restore and protect the structure of your tooth.

What Steps Are Involved in Filling a Tooth?”

First, the dentist uses a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth with the decay. They then remove the decay from the tooth. The choice of instrument depends on the individual dentist’s training and comfort level.

Next, once the decay has been removed, the dentist will prepare the space for the filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. If the decay is near the root, your dentist may first put in a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material to protect the nerve.

Finally after your dentist removes the decay and cleaned the area, we apply the tooth-colored material in layers. We use a special light that “cures” or hardens each layer. After completing the multilayering process, the dentist will shape the composite material to the desired result, trim off any excess material, and polish the final restoration.
Generally, after the filling is in, your dentist will finish and polish it.

Understanding Composite Fillings

The New Standard For Filling Cavities

In the past, the only material used for filling cavities was metal amalgam, which has silver, tin, copper, and mercury. Metal amalgam is very pliable and resists wear and tear, but it is also grayish in color and does not match your natural teeth. Alternatively, composite fillings comprise a special dental resin that is strong and durable. We try to match this material to the exact color of your tooth enamel. At our offices, we repair cavities with composite fillings so you won’t have to worry about negatively impacting the aesthetics of your smile..

These include silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper) , gold , porcelain , medicated fillings. However we use more tooth-colored, plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings. There also exists materials that contains glass particles and fluoride releasing agents. These called glass ionomers. Glass ionomer have similar uses to composites.
