What To Look Out For
Signs of a Dental Emergency
Toothaches are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. While a toothache can indicate a small cavity, it can also mean that your tooth has an infection. At My Dental Club, we consider a toothache to be a dental emergency because if left untreated, it will always get worse and lead to more complications.
As a rule, we define a dental emergency as any oral issue that is causing you pain, discomfort, and/or bleeding, that you cannot treat on your own. If you are experiencing one of these issues, contact us right away for an appointment or stop by our office.
Taking The Right Steps
What To Do In A Dental Emergency
- First, you should call the team at My Dental Club to let us know that you are coming in for an emergency appointment.
- Next, recover your tooth if it has been knocked out.
- Rinse it off with warm water and replace it in the socket or put it in a container of cold milk.
- Rinse recovered dental work and store it in a plastic bag.
- If you are bleeding, you can use cotton balls or sterile gauze to absorb the blood. Bleeding should slow and stop within 1-2 hours, at most.
- To treat pain and discomfort, you can take an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) like naproxen (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).
- Treating any swelling is by applying an ice pack externally to the cheek. Once you have treated bleeding, pain and discomfort, come to My Dental Club as soon as you can to get professional treatment for your dental emergency.

Severe Toothaches
Toothaches are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. While a toothache can indicate a small cavity, it can also mean that your tooth has an infection. At My Dental Club, we consider a toothache to be a dental emergency because if left untreated, it will always get worse and lead to more complications. If you notice a toothache or sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, come in right away!
After we examine your tooth, we will suggest necessary treatments to get you out of pain and back to optimal health. The most common reasons behind a toothache or a cavity or infection for which the treatment is a dental filling or root canal therapy.

Loose or Missing Dental Work
If you notice that a filling or crown has become loose, this is a dental emergency. When a filling or crown is loose or missing, this leaves your vulnerable tooth exposed to oral bacteria, which can lead to further decay and infection. When you come to My Dental Club for your emergency appointment, bring your dental work with you. We may be able to use the same crown or filling to treat your tooth. If not, we will give you a new filling or crown to protect your tooth from further damage.
Common Dental Emergency #3
Chipped or Cracked Teeth
If your tooth is chipped or cracked in an accident, we offer same-day care to get you back to smiling again. With a dental crown from My Dental Club, you will be back to your daily routine in no time! A tooth that is left untreated after its outer layers have been damaged can lead to further complications. When the inner pulp of your tooth is exposed to food debris and oral bacteria, this often results in infection and requires root canal therapy. Come in as soon as you notice a chipped or damaged tooth to avoid more serious issues!
Other Emergencies
Here are some tips for other common dental emergencies:
- For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it in between your cheek and gums, in milk. Then, get to your dentist’s office right away.
- For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area. Put cold compresses on the face to keep any swelling down.
- If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.
- For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between the teeth. Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues.
- For objects stuck in the mouth, try to gently remove with floss but do not try to remove it with sharp or pointed instruments.

When you have a dental emergency, it’s important to visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.
Precautions
Avoiding Dental Trauma
- Wear a mouth guard when participating in sports or recreational activities.
- Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth.
- Use scissors, NEVER your teeth, to cut things.

We offer same-day emergency appointments at all of our locations. If possible, we ask that you call ahead so that we can prepare for your visit and offer the best service as soon as your arrive. However, we know this isn’t always possible, so don’t hesitate to walk-in without calling. We will do our best to accommodate you and get you the emergency treatment you need as quickly as possible.
